Hialeah, FL / January 15, 2015 – Trainer Rolando Almanza has earned his way to the winner’s circle with victories in major races not only at Hialeah Park, but also at many other major Quarter Horse tracks across the country.

And even though the capable conditioner looks to have a very strong hand heading into the two richest races of the 2014-15 season here on Sunday January 18, the $204,715 Hialeah Maturity for four-years olds at 440 yards and the $417,575 Hialeah Derby for three-year olds at 400 yards, he’ll admit to a slight case of trepidation.

“I’m a little nervous,” Almanza confessed. “Even though I’ve got the fastest qualifiers in both races, Daytona B in the Maturity and Moonin the Eagle in the Derby, I wouldn’t be human if I didn’t have butterflies in my stomach.”

Almanza made note of the scar on Daytona B’s hindquarters, saying the initial injury –a deep cut suffered shortly after the gelding arrived in Florida– almost forced him keep owner Gregorio Garcia Garza’s horse out of the trials.

“But we treated the injury very aggressively, even using a laser, and it healed up well enough for us to run him December 28.  He’s doing fine now, he came back strong from his win in the trials, and he’s ready to roll. I don’t mind getting the inside draw. If (jockey) Yordanis (Amaro) breaks him well, the post position won’t matter.”

The field for the 2015 Hialeah Maturity, in post position order, will be: Daytona B, EL Macho Prieto Boy, Dashin for a Prize, Max Cartel, Gals Gotta Sizzle, Pruittized, Royal Fast Jess, Cautionsly, Jessies First Down, and Quick Dynasty.

As for his two Hialeah Derby horses, fastest qualifier Moonin the Eagle and barn mate Bp Run Cartel Run, who also won his trial, they drew right next to each other in the middle of a ten-horse field.

“That means they’ll probably push each other early,” Almanza commented. “Both horses are good enough to win the race, so we’ll see what happens in the heat of battle.”

Runners in 2015 Hialeah Derby, in order, will be: Red Corona Warrior, Allazoom, Seize The Win, A Black Zipper, Denim Jeans, Moonin The Eagle, Bp Run Cartel Run, Mr El R 15, Kitty Kat Galore B, and Tlc Moonshine Wagon.
