17-0-1 Puerto Rican Fights In Semi-Main Event Before Top-Billed Garcia-Cayo Affair
Middeweight Jonathan González Gets Televised Opportunity On “Noche De Combates” Card
Hialeah, FL / April 7, 2014 – Middleweight boxer Jonathan “Mantequilla” González (17-0-1, 14 KOs), a 24-year-old Puerto Rican who has held two recognized regional titles and who turned heads in a highly successful amateur career, will take on Rogelio “Porky” Medina (32-5, 26 KOs) of Mexico on May 1 at Hialeah Park.
The ten-round bout will be the semi-main event on a special edition of ESPN Thursday Night Fights billed as “Noche De Combates” that will be televised nationally and internationally on ESPN 2 and ESPN Deportes.
González has just one disputed draw on an otherwise perfect record after 18 professional fights, the most recent which was a fifth-round knockout victory over Jaison Palomeque in Chicago last December.
The draw took place in September 2011 when González went the twelve-round distance against the ultra-tough former world champion Serhiy Dzinziruk of Ukraine. In the scoring for that fight, one judge saw the fight 115-113 for González, another scored the bout 117-111 for Dzinziruk, while a third judge had the fight even at 114-114.
Medina signed to fight González on the heels of his recent first-round knockout victory over Fortino Lugo in Sonora, Mexico on March 21. Prior to that victory, Medina had dropped consecutive bouts against Marcos Reyes and Jack Badou in late 2013.
