Hialeah, FL / February 13, 2014 – The 2013-14 Quarter Horse season at Hialeah Park –arguably the most ambitious undertaking since live racing returned to this landmark Florida venue in 2009-10– resumes on Valentine’s Day Friday February 14 with the first of four consecutive programs over the holiday weekend. Racing continues Saturday and Sunday before the week concludes with a President’s Day card on Monday February 17.
The penultimate racing week of the season includes the 1st running of the $25,000-added Sparkling Tip Stakes for three-year-olds at 300 yards, carded as the 8th race of a nine-race program on Sunday February 16.
Ten horses were enlisted for the Sparkling Tip at entry time on Monday, including last-out winners Pappasinthehouse, Sting Like A Viper, Frans Hero, A Tac, and Jesstastic.
On paper, A Tac –a filly by Tac It Like A Man out of the Corona Cartel mare Corona Cairina– appears to have a slight edge. The Judd Kearl trainee has run well in both of her starts at the meet, including a near-record setting victory at 250 yards in an allowance-level affair January 12. A Tac ran the distance in 13.055 seconds, just off the mark of 12.893 seconds set by Madresita on January 6, 2014. Prior to that outing, A Tac just missed at the Sparkling Tip distance of 300 yards, finishing second to Supertanker on December 15, 2013.
The other last-out winners all figure as strong contenders in the Sparkling Tip, as does Pm Runaway Dash. Trainer Jesus Garrido has saddled the daughter of Heza Fast Dash-Runaway Lady Oak to a win and two second-place finishes in her last three local starts. The filly won an allowance-level “super sprint” at 220 yards on January 6, then finished a game second to Ja Jess Elegance in the Biscayne Stakes at 250 yards on January 19.
The field for the Sparkling Tip Stakes, inside to outside, is: Pm Runaway Dash, Dream Ride, Pappasinthehouse, Patriots Fury, Spittin Jessie, Sting Like A Viper, Frans Hero, A Tac, Jesstastic and Dashin Bye Slinky.
Hialeah Park continues Sunday with two popular promotions for the fans and horseplayers. The Progressive Flamingo 6 Jackpot has reached the $60,000 mark this week. The jackpot goes to a single player with a winning ticket in the 10¢ Flamingo 6 (4th – 9th races) on a Sunday. Additionally, one on-track “Lucky Loser” will receive $5,000 cash if his or her “losing ticket” is drawn from the barrel in the winner’s circle after the 7th race.
After the four-day holiday weekend, only an abbreviated two-day racing week will remain on the 2013-14 live racing calendar. Hialeah Park will offer stakes-laden programs on Saturday February 22 and Sunday February 23 to bring the curtain down on the 5th season of live Quarter Horse racing in South Florida.
