HIALEAH PARK SETS FLORIDA QUARTER HORSE WAGERING MARK, MADRESITA RUNS NEW 250 BEST
Hialeah, FL / January 6, 2014 – The all-sources mutuel handle for Monday’s “make up” card at Hialeah Park topped out at $405,906 to establish an all-time high for a Quarter Horse program at this iconic racing landmark.
The final total was almost $25,000 better than the previous high of $381,751 set on Christmas Eve, Saturday December 24, 2011.
The Monday January 6 date was added to the 2013-14 racing calendar after the track elected not to host live racing on Saturday December 22, 2013, which was the date of Jose Feliciano concert at Hialeah Park.
The WPS pools for all eight races on the Monday card were at least $12,000 or better, including an $18,361 best on the 3rd race. That same race also drew $18,537 into the exacta pool, which was the best exotic pot of the day.
Hialeah Park will offer one additional Monday live racing program on January 20. That date did appear on the original calendar for the season.
On the race track, the four-year-old sorrel mare Madresita –owned by Rodney Verret, trained by John Stinebaugh, and ridden by Luis Guerrero– set a new Hialeah Park record for 250 yards in her half-length victory as the 9-5 betting favorite in Monday’s 5th race.
Madresita stopped the timer in 12.893 seconds, .169 of a second better than the 13.060 clocking recorded by Rdustys Fury on December 1, 2013.
As it turned out, Madresita and the next three finishers in the race –Calamity Jamie (12.968), Carters Follies (13.022), and Vancouver (13.055)– all bested the old record.
The winner was making her Hialeah Park debut in the allowance race for fillies & mares three-and-up. But she had served prior notice in her only other attempt at 250 yards, a 6th-place “no threat” finish in a $50,000 stakes race at the Fair Grounds last August, by recording a 12.918 second clocking into a 10 MPH headwind.
Madresita was winless in six 2013 starts, but she had won 3 races and finished in-the-money 7 times in 14 career outings prior to her 2014 debut.
