MI ANGELA PREVAILS IN THRILLING THREE-HORSE FINISH, POSTS UPSET WIN IN BEAUTIFUL PRAIRIE
Hialeah, FL / February 9, 2014 – The four-year-old bay filly Mi Angela, overlooked in the wagering at 7-1 even after an allowance-level win as a 6-5 favorite January 5, proved best by a head over 25-1 runner-up Wagons West in winning Sunday’s 27,000 Beautiful Prairie Stakes at Hialeah Park.
The winner, a Texas-bred daughter of Jet Black Patriot-Dashin Follies owned by Cesar Rosales, was saddled by trainer Rolando Almanza and ridden to victory by veteran jockey Shanley Jackson.
Mi Angela covered the race distance of 250 yards in a sharp time of 12.947 seconds, .054 of a second off the track record of 12.893 seconds set by Madresita –8th place finisher in the Beautiful Prairie– on January 6.
“Mr. Rosales and I are thrilled, she ran really well,” said conditioner Almanza. He added, “We knew she could compete with these horses and we expected her to run a big one today.”
“It was a really good prep for her. We’ve been shooting for the ($100,000-guaranteed Sam Abbey Memorial) invitational at the end of the meet (February 23) and we believe she’s earned a spot in the starting gate.”
Mi Angela notched her 6th career victory, and her 3rd tally at Hialeah Park, in her 15th lifetime start. She garnered the winner’s share of $16,200 to drive her career earnings over the $100,000 mark at $113,581.
With a significant show wager on 3-1 second choice Tampico, who finished 7th, and 2-1 favorite Valiant Lil Lady settling for 5th, the results of the race produced interesting mutuel payoffs.
Mi Angela paid $17.00 to win, $12.00 to place, and $10.40 to show, Wagons West returned $31.20 to place and $30.40 to show, while A Plain Brown Rapper paid $17.40 to show. A 10¢ superfecta ticket on the winning combination of 6-5-1-7 was good for $1,073.28.
The official order of finish in the 2014 Beautiful Prairie was: Mi Angela, Wagons West, A Plain Brown Rapper, Straightfromtheheart, Valiant Lil Lady, Bps Jumpin Frisco, Tampico, and Madresita.
Hialeah Park now moves into the penultimate week of the 2013-14 season with four days of live racing on the calendar over Valentine’s Day weekend. Racing resumes here Friday February 14 and continues through a special Monday afternoon card on Presidents’ Day February 17.
