FOUR LAST-OUT WINNERS IN CITY OF HIALEAH, FIELD INCLUDES THE ACCOMPLISHED JOKER ON JACK
Hialeah, FL / January 9, 2014 – Sunday’s featured $25,000-added City of Hialeah Stakes, for three-year-olds and up at 400 yards, drew a full field of 10 runners at entry time, including four last-out winners and the highly accomplished Hialeah Park “horse for course” Joker On Jack.
The last-out winners include Hialeah Sophomore Invitational heroine Texelkas Chic, who was up at the finish line to defeat Straightfromtheheart and Ms Southern Dynasty on December 29 while registering a solid time of 21.891 seconds for 440 yards.
Trainer Eduardo Morales will switch jockeys for Sunday’s race to Yordanis Amaro with Osdany Leal, who rode Texelkas Chic in her victory, sitting out the weekend on suspension.
But Morales said Amaro is no stranger to the four-year-old daughter of Jumpn Chic, “Yordanis was aboard when she broke her maiden last May at Delta Downs and he’s ridden her a total of four times. He knows her well.”
Morales, explaining his mare’s improvement over her last three races, said, “She was very green when she raced here last season. We gave her a couple of months off and she matured. We had to back off after the Delta Downs race, but she came back strongly in the Hialeah Derby trials and the Sophomore Invitational.”
In addition to Texelkas Chic, three other last-out winners, Okey Dokey Diamond, Authority Choice, and Sure Shot B all visited the Hialeah Park winner’s circle during the last weekend of December. Okey Dokey Diamond won an optional $15,000 claimer, Authority Choice scored a strong allowance-level win, and Sure Shot B registered a “super sprint” victory running 220 yards at the allowance level.
On numbers, though, it appears the road to victory in the City of Hialeah goes through six-time winner Joker On Jack, a lifetime earner of over $350,000. The Alfredo Gomez trainee won a trial for the Hialeah Derby, but settled for 3rd in the “money run” behind fastest qualifier and derby winner Dash Master Jess.
As a two-year-old, the gelded son of Pyc Paint Your Wagon won the Hialeah Laddie Futurity in December 2012. In September 2013, Joker On Jack went to Texas and scored a win in the Refrigerator Handicap at Lone Star Park.
The field for Sunday’s City of Hialeah, carded as the 8th race on the program, from inside to outside: Dreamnwideopen, Wild Ryde, Lighting Regard, Coppers Fit, Texelkas Chic, Feature My News, Okey Dokey Diamond, Authority Choice, Joker On Jack, and Sure Shot B.
